Search for Books

IIT Library Catalog
Search for books held at IIT Libraries. You can also use the catalog to search for any of the e-book titles from Books 24x7.

I-Share Catalog
A catalog of the collections of dozens of academic libraries that are part of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois. Use the Request feature to submit a request for an item from another library.

WorldCat
An online catalog of more than 8,000 libraries worldwide. Use the MyILL button to place requests for materials not owned by IIT or I-Share Libraries. Make sure that the item you want is not available in either the IIT or I-Share catalog before submitting a request in WorldCat.

On the Shelf

Computer science books are grouped by subject and located within the call number ranges QA75.5-76.96 and TK7885-7895. These ranges are located on the upper level of the Galvin Library. Use the IIT Library Catalog to find a specific title.

E-Books

Books 24x7
Books 24x7 is a database of over 4,500 E-books covering computer science and information technology from more than 80 publishers, including MIT Press, Que, Microsoft Press, and many more. This resource is great for finding programming how-to books and technical manuals for network administration, operating systems, database management, and other IT topics. Use the My Bookshelf feature to save a list of books or book chapters you have been using, so you can easily pick up where you left off during your previous sessions. Full-text.

Manuals & Tech Books

Programming manuals for a variety of languages and many other “how-to” books on information technology are available online from Books 24x7. To search for print copies, use the IIT Library Catalog and search by keyword for the language or program you are interested in. If you want to physically browse the books, go to the QA76 section of the library (located on the upper level).

Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Handbooks, etc.

These types of books are located in the Reference Collection (on the upper level of the library). Reference books cannot be checked out and must stay in the library. To search for reference books, use the IIT Library Catalog. The following is a list of some useful titles:

Computer science and engineering handbook
REF.QA76.C57315 1997

Encyclopedia of computer science
REF.QA76.15.E48 2003

Encyclopedia of computers and computer history
REF.QA76.15.E53 2001

A to Z of computer scientists
REF.QA76.2.A2H46 2003

Handbook on parallel and distributed processing
REF.QA76.58.H36 2000

Handbook of neural network signal processing
REF.QA76.87.H345 2002

Computer engineering handbook
REF.TK7885.C645 2002

Textbooks

The library does not provide circulating copies of textbooks. However, some current and past textbooks have been placed on Reserve. Reserve books can be checked out for two hours at a time but cannot be removed from the library. This ensures they are available to as many students as possible during the semester they are assigned. To search for textbooks on reserve, use the IIT Library Catalog.
