Laptop Area

While in the library building, users may now plug laptop computers into the Galvin local area network (LAN). There are four access ports on the second floor of the library, on the same table as the Internet/E-mail terminals. Follow the signs from the R eference Area to get to this location.

Users plugging in laptops to the library network are provided with full connectivity to the Internet and all library databases, as well as network printing. There are two primary requirements for all laptop users:

1. The laptop must have an Ethernet, 10BaseT or 100BaseT network card. Ethernet is the most common LAN standard, and the vast majority of PCs and laptops with network connectivity have Ethernet cards.

2. The TCP/IP protocol must be installed. TCP/IP is the Internet protocol. All PCs have TCP/IP, but it must be properly installed and configured.

How to connect using a laptop port in the Galvin Library using PCs (Windows 95, 98, or NT 4.0)

1. Go to "Control Panel."
2. Double click on the "Network" icon.
3. Double click on the "Protocols" tab. (You should see TCP/IP. If not click the "Add" tab and select it from the list.)
4. Double click on the "IP address" tab.
5. Select "Obtain IP address from DHCP server," or "Obtain IP address automatically."
Warning! Both NT and Win95 will erase prior IP settings upon enabling DHCP. Unfortunately, those settings cannot be saved. Be sure to take note of prior settings (including IP and DNS) before enabling DHCP.
6. Click OK.
7. Re-boot your computer as instructed.

Macintosh (MacOS 7.6 and above using Open Transport)

1. Select "Control Panel" from the Apple Menu.
2. Select "TCP/IP"
3. Make sure ""Connect via Ethernet" is selected.
4. Select "Configure via DHCP Server"*

*Users requiring multiple network configuration files can create a network configuration file for Galvin laptop access and use it as necessary. This file/profile should mirror the configuration information listed above. Macintosh, fortunately, allows u sers to create and save multiple network configurations, i.e., IP and DNS settings. Doing so is surprisingly simple:

  • Select "Control Menu" from the Apple Menu.

  • Select "TCP-IP"

  • Select "Configurations" from File Menu

  • Select the "default" configuration

  • Click on the "duplicate" button

  • When prompted to name the "duplicate" configuration, identify it as Galvin (or a name to distinguish this particular configuration)

  • You will now see your new configuration listed.

  • Select it and click on the "Make Active" button

  • Select "Configure via DHCP Server"

Congratulations!

You know have a configuration that will allow you to enter the Galvin network.
