Course Reserves

Reserves allow students to use materials set aside by faculty to assist in coursework. This may include reading material, practice exams, problem sets, etc. For questions on reserves, contact Nasir Mirza, Galvin Library Reserves Specialist (7-3620).

Submitting Reserves
Faculty may place reading materials on Reserve to allow students maximum access to a specific work. Reserve materials may be from the library's collection or may be the instructor's personal copies. Almost any type of material may be placed on Reserve as long as it is not in violation of copyright laws or the fair-use guidelines (see below). The types of materials usually placed on Reserve are:

Materials can either be placed online as E-Reserves or on the Reserve Shelf (located at the Circulation Desk of the Galvin Library).


E-Reserves

Submitting E-Reserves
To place items on electronic reserve, faculty must:

  1. Fill out a Reserve Request Form for each document to be placed on Reserve.
  2. Return the completed form via email to Nasir Mirza, Galvin Library Reserves Specialist (7-3620), or print and return to the Galvin Library Circulation Desk either in-person or via campus mail, along with the materials to be placed on Reserve.

For paper submissions to be scanned:

  • Print or write very clearly, using dark ink
  • Submit on plain white 8 ½ x 11 paper

For e-mail submissions:

  • Material must be attached as a .pdf file

In addition to course number and instructor name, please provide the title, type of document, date, and number of pages for each document. E-Reserve material will be posted within 48 hours of its receipt.
 

Reserve Shelf

Books & Videos
To place items on the reserve shelf, faculty must:

  1. Fill out a Reserve Request Form for each item to be placed on Reserve.
  2. Return the completed form via email to Nasir Mirza, Galvin Library Reserves Specialist (7-3620), or print and return to the Galvin Library Circulation Desk either in-person or via campus mail.
Requests for books from our collection should be placed at least two weeks in advance of the semester. Requests for books to be purchased should be placed at least six weeks in advance of the semester. Textbooks will not be purchased.

Loan Periods & Fines
Items placed on the Reserve Shelf must be renewed by faculty every semester. Items requiring special instruction, or that faculty wish to place on permanent reserve, must be disucssed with the Reserves Specialist. Faculty may designate the borrowing time on materials they submit. Loan periods and the fines associated with late returns are listed below:

  • Library Use Only The item may be used for any length of time while the library is open, but may not leave the building.
  • 2-Hour Use The item may be used in the library for a two-hour time period. Fine: $1/hr
  • 24-Hour Use The item may be taken out of the library for a 24-hour time period. Fine: $3/day
  • 3-Day Use The item may be taken out of the library for a 3-day time period. Fine: $3/day


Copyright Notice

  • The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.
  • Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use" that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
  • This institution reserves the right to refuse fulfillment of the order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.
