Access & Usage
The university library system has a primary mission to support the educational, teaching, research, and administrative needs of the faculty, students, and staff of Illinois Institute of Technology. The collections are accessible to others whose information needs require these resources, and any individual has access to library facilities to use general stack collections, space and resources permitting. Due to the specialized nature or fragility of some materials, the use of some special collections may be governed by more restrictive policies. Policies governing the use of the facilities and collections reflect this mission.
Library staff are committed to maintaining a quality study and research environment, protecting the rights of users and sustaining the integrity of collections. In addition to policies and procedures noted below, university-wide policies or civil laws related to facilities or collection vandalism apply.
Visitors
During regular semester hours, all are welcome to visit the library when the upper level opens until 6:00 pm. After 6:00 pm, access is restricted to students, faculty and staff of IIT. Students and faculty from I-Share institutions & IIT Alumni may be admitted until 9:00 pm by presenting an university ID at the circulation desk.
No animals are allowed in Galvin Library. Guide or service dogs as deemed necessary by the American with Disabilities Act and security dogs with their handlers are exempt from this policy.
Library staff reserve the right to limit access to materials, resources, or equipment needed by IIT students and faculty. Visitors must conduct themselves in a way that does not disrupt the study environment of the library or threaten damage to library collections, resources, facilities, or equipment.
Each visitor under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult, 21 years of age or older. In addition, parents are responsible for the use of the library and the behavior of their children. Visitors who fail to adhere to these policies will be asked to leave the library.
Study and Computer Areas
Some areas within library facilities serve users with specific collection needs. Priority seating
in these areas may be given to IIT faculty, students, staff, alumni or visiting researchers.
In order to maintain a quality study and research environment, we ask that individuals exercise sensitivity to other users; individuals who wish to engage in discussion are encouraged to use group study rooms when available.
Galvin Library's computers are part of the IIT network and require a faculty, staff or student login.
Classrooms and Group Study Rooms
These facilities are available to members of the IIT community, except by special arrangement.
The Galvin Library has study carrels for individual use. These carrels are available on a first-come,
first-serve basis. Members of the campus community may contact library@iit.edu for procedures for reserving the Donnelly
conference room. Classroom facilities at the Galvin Library are available for class use related to
library instruction.
Destruction or Mutilation of Library Materials
Any person who willfully, maliciously, or wantonly mutilates, defaces, or mars any library material
or facility will be asked to make appropriate restitution, and may be subjected to loss of library
privileges, to appropriate administrative action within the University, and to prosecution under
Illinois state law.
Security and Safety
Any person using the library may be asked by library staff and/or security personnel to show
identification and, if the person refuses, he or she may be asked to leave the facility. Library
staff are authorized and will call IIT Public Safety to remove any person refusing to vacate the
facility, or any time there is a disturbance or suspicious activity. 911 will be called in case
of fire or medical emergency or if law enforcement assistance is needed.
Emergencies
In the event of fire, tornadoes, or other emergency situations, library staff will alert building
occupants to the procedures for evacuation or taking shelter.
Food and Drink
Food and drink are not allowed in library computing areas. Drinks with lids or caps are allowed
in study areas if appropriate care is taken. Snacks are permitted, but messy or odorous food is
discouraged and violators may be asked to leave. Trash receptacles are provided throughout the
library.
Cell Phones
In order to provide an optimum environment for using the library, patrons are asked to conduct cell
phone conversations away from study and research areas, turn off ringers and leave phones on "vibrate" while
in the library. Users who violate this policy may be asked to leave the library.
Filming/Photography
Individuals who wish to film or photograph within a library facility must contact library@iit.edu. Requests will be accommodated only
if there is minimal impact on the environment for research and study.
Literature Distribution, Solicitation
Posters, bulletins or solicitations may be displayed only with the appropriate stamp provided by
the Dean of Students' office and posted in designated areas on the Lower Level.
Questions concerning library facilities may be directed to library administration at library@iit.edu or 312.567.5136. Failure to comply with library policies may result in limitation of access to library facilities or loss of library privileges.
