See the lamps made out of books on display in the upper level National Library Week display.  The two winning entries will be announced on the library blog, and winners will receive gift certificates to Barnes and Noble.

Picks from the Pros:
It’s a librarian’s job to know what the best books are, so why not get your next book recommendation from us? See what your Galvin Librarians favorite books are on the upper level National Library Week display.

Caution: Dangerous books ahead!
Ever wonder what a book ravaged by cockroaches looks like? Remember the old "my dog ate my homework" excuse? Check out some of Galvin’s scariest books, all battered and bruised from dangers like food, pets, bugs, and liquids. Also see a rare vintage photocopy, on life support and desperately waiting for some expert conservationist to keep it alive. You’ll think twice about what you do to your books after seeing this display!

Events:

Tuesday, April 17th
National Library Worker Day
Celebrate National Library Worker Day with Galvin Library and the American Library Association (ALA) on Tuesday, April 17. National Library Worker Day was founded in order to recognize the hard work, dedication, and expertise of library support staff and librarians. On Tuesday, library workers, library groups, and libraries advocate for better compensation for all library workers. Library workers of IIT unite! You have nothing to lose but your sensible shoes!

Wednesday, April 18th
Lunch in the Library: Potbelly Sandwiches
Come to the front entrance of Galvin Library for a lunch catered by Potbellys! Refuel with a sandwich, chips, and a soda for only $3, starting at 11:30. While you're here, check out our National Library Week Display upstairs. Sponsored by SGA.

Workshops:
Sharpen your research skills! Attend one of these training sessions on a variety of library resources, see all that Galvin has to offer, and reap the benefits of library resources. All sessions are held in the Library Learning Center (LLC), located on the lower level of Galvin Library, from 12:15-1:15.

Finding Books and Articles at Galvin
Been awhile since you had to find a book? Don’t know where to look for articles? Then this session is perfect for you! Galvin Library has over a million volumes, and access to over 30 million books through our sharing agreement with 64 other Illinois Universities! We have almost one hundred specialized databases, with thousands of journals inside. Take advantage of all Galvin has to offer! Learn the basics of catalog and database searching, and discover how much more efficient your research can be.

Tuesday, April 17th
Beyond the Basics: Finding Journal Articles
You have a term paper due that requires all sorts of scholarly and peer-reviewed articles. You need the latest IEEE standard on integrated circuitry for a project you are working on. Where do you find these materials? How do you start your research? Attend this session to learn what databases are, how to pick the best databases for your topic, and how to maximize your searching ability within the databases. You’ll leave prepared to tackle that next research assignment head-on.

Thursday, April 19th
Introduction to Searching LexisNexis Academic
LexisNexis Academic has an unending depth of current news, legal, and business resources. Why spend time reading every paper looking for one topic when you can have a database search them for you? Not only does it contain more than 350 newspapers, 400 magazines, and television news transcripts, but it also updates the news several times a day with all the largest news wire services like the Associated Press. Need company financial reports? Check the business section of LexisNexis Academic for SEC filings, industry and market reports, company profiles, and a myriad of other current business resources. Come to this session to learn all the great ways to use LexisNexis Academic.

Friday, April 20th
Introduction to Using RefWorks to Manage Citations
Working on your dissertation and have dozens of citations scattered about? Working on a group project or want to share citations and resources with your peers? Building a bibliography of current research on a specific topic? RefWorks allows you to do all of this and more. RefWorks, the citation management software tool for the IIT community, helps organize, store, and share your citations. Learn how to import citations directly from databases, organize your citations, create bibliographies in any citation style, and share them with others at this session. You’ll never have to search for that perfect citation you lost again once you start using RefWorks.
