Microfiche Scanning
The Government Documents Depository at the Paul V. Galvin Library has a microfiche (pronounced "micro-feesh") scanning program. If you need access a microfiche item, Government Documents staff can scan the item and post it to their site in PDF format for you.
To request a microfiche scan:
- Check to see whether your title is posted on a government server. The majority of requests are for NASA titles. If the title you desire is from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), it may be available via the NASA Technical Reports Server. The quick way to check is to use the report abbreviation and number. For instance, "NASA Technical Paper 4050" could be searched for using the string "TP 4050". Should the citation say "No Digital Version - Order This Document", that means it is unavailable eledctronically. Proceed to step 2.
- Browse or search the titles already posted on the Government Documents site. Search for your title by SuDocs call number (in the IIT Library Catalog, the number with the prefix MFICHE.DOC.) or by title. It is possible that someone requested the title you need previously.
- If the title is unavailable online (steps #1 and 2), then pull up the IIT Library Catalog record for the title you desire. The best way to ensure that the correct title will be scanned is to include the entire record in the request.
- Once you have the record on the screen, scroll to the bottom of the record. Click on the button that says "Text-Only Display (For Print or Download)". The record will now appear in text format. Copy the record text.
- Go to the Government Documents Microfiche Scanning Request Form. Place the cursor in the big box at the bottom of the form, then paste the record into the box. Fill out the rest of the form with your personal information, and hit the "Submit" button to complete your request.
