History

The Graham Resource Center (GRC) at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is the primary reference and research source for College of Architecture students, staff, and faculty and is supported by the Paul V. Galvin Library, the main campus library.

The GRC opened in 1993 with funding provided via a grant from the Graham Foundation. Additionally, the GRC received separate funding to create the Daniel Brenner Memorial Slide Collection. The GRC, located in Crown Hall, is approximately 36,000 square feet and includes seating for around 50 students. Five large tables seat 40 students comfortably and hold computers for the students and faculty to use. There are 8 Brno chairs for more casual seating along the interior glass wall of the library. Large indexes, oversized books and light tables are at the west desk area. The east desk is the main information desk.

Both the GRC and Galvin Libraries possess architecture-related print materials. The GRC houses approximately 15,000 volumes with Galvin maintaining and serving an additional 5,000 monographs. Additionally, the Galvin generously provides to IIT Architecture scholars on-line access to a number of electronic resources. Although students and faculty will likely begin their research in the GRC, it is important to understand that any work beyond a cursory search will almost certainly employ Galvin-supported or -provided resources in a variety of formats and media.
