Internet Publications
This is our guide to Internet publications from the U.S. government. It is
divided by Agency and SuDoc number.
Google UncleSam http://www.google.com/unclesam
Google recently launched their government search service that searches exclusively on .gov
sites. Their database is approximately 750,000-1,000,000 government web sites.
Although smaller than some of the other search engines, Google concentrates on
relevancy, and will often return the page you are looking for in the top few results.
Firstgov
http://www.firstgov.gov/
This government search engine has the a nice directory, and a good
featured subject index. It is becoming more comprehensive, and is an
excellent site.
United States Government Agency, Document, & Resource Search Page http://www.nwbuildnet.com/nwbn/govbot.html
This page allows you to search for information from several government search pages
including: FedWorld, THOMAS, IRS, Dept. of Commerce, and Standard Industrial
Classification codes and industries. All of these searches are discussed further
down this page.
Northern Light USgovsearch http://usgovsearch.northernlight.com/publibaccess/
At Northern Light, you can search for military or government web sites by checking the
appropriate boxes in "Select Sources." Northern Light has recently
released the fee service USgovsearch. This new service has increased the database
size of the free service to about 2,000,000 records of government and military sites.
HotBot http://www.hotbot.com/
Hot Bot also allows you to search by domain name (EX: .gov or .mil) for government or
military web sites. It is a little bit trickier. You must got to HotBot's main
page and select "Advanced Search." Then, under "Location/Domain"
you must select "Domain" and enter .gov or .mil.
Yahoo! Government http://dir.yahoo.com/Government/
This is an excellent source for international government information, as well as agency
and military information. You can perform a search under this category only.
FedWorld http://www.fedworld.gov/
FedWorld allows you to search a number of databases specifically, or all of them at once.
You can also search for U.S. Government reports, or browse their collection. It is
an excellent source for many types of government information.
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Resources http://www.gl.iit.edu/govdocs/foia.html
Everything that used to be secret that is now available to you.
GovSpot http://www.govspot.com/
Free guide to government information. Provides a guide to information from the
government on issues, statistics, federal, international, state, and much more.
GPO Access http://www.access.gpo.gov/
The Government Printing Office is the organization that
prints most government related information. They provide many databases at this site
that include: Commerce Business Daily,
Congressional Hearings, Weekly Compilation of Presidential
Documents, Supreme Court
Decisions, Public Laws, the Federal Register, the Code of Federal Regulations, and
much more. They also offer the ability to search on multiple databases at once at: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/aaces002.html.
IRS Forms http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/forms_pubs/findfiles.html
This is the place to find official tax forms from the IRS.
Langley Technical Reports Server http://techreports.larc.nasa.gov/ltrs/ltrs.html
Offers full-text of many NASA Technical Reports.
Meta-Subject Index to Government Information http://www.isu.edu/~woodstep/Subjects_1.html
A fairly comprehensive subject guide to government documents.
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) http://www.nist.gov/search.htm
You can search their entire database of information on current research, and industry
standards.
National Technical Information Service (NTIS) http://www.ntis.gov/search.htm
The NTIS has one of the largest collections of technical reports and information.
You can search their database here. They are willing to give you the information,
but very little of it is free.
Standard Industrial Classification Search (SIC) http://www.osha.gov/oshstats/sicser.html
Search for the SIC for a particular industry, or search for industries by SIC code.
Thomas http://thomas.loc.gov/
Thomas is the best source for Congressional legislation information, information on
congressional leaders, committee reports, public laws, congressional record, bill text,
and countless other areas of Congressional information.
USPS Zip Code Finder http://www.usps.gov/ncsc/lookups/lookups.htm
Several search options to find a zip code for an address or a city.
Finding Print Publications
GPO Access Monthly Catalog MoCat (1994-Present) http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/locators/cgp/index.html
GPO is also the place to find print publications through the Catalog of U.S. Government
Publications. This version of the Monthly Catalog allows you to locate libraries with the
item.
Monthly Catalog of Government Publications OCLC MoCat (1976-Present)
Restricted to IIT Only

This version of the Monthly Catalog is more comprehensive, but there is no locate
libraries feature.
WorldCat

The most complete source for government documents information. Contains
bibliographic records for government documents, as well as library holding information.
National Technical Information Service (NTIS) http://www.ntis.gov/search.htm
The NTIS also contains a wide variety of print publications. Almost all NTIS
publications are subject to a fee.
USGS Topographic Maps http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/findmaps.html
Use this site to find the maps that the USGS produces, and order them.
