In order to expedite the
shipment of and minimize the storage
requirements of government documents titles, the
Government Printing Office has throughout the
latter 20th and into the 21st centuries used
machine readable microfiche (pronounced
"micro-feesh") format. Although
the last 10 years have seen a shift to
electronic format for many government materials,
in particular web based solutions, many titles
are still received in microfiche format.
The transition to electronic formats for
government materials, in particular technical
reports, has been inconsistent, and there is no
assurance that a major retroactive effort will
be made to post older materials. Additionally,
although the microfiche format allows great
amounts of material to be stored in a small
space, access to the individual titles is less
than ideal.
It was with these
considerations in mind that the Government
Documents Depository at the Paul V. Galvin
Library has instituted a scanning program.
We hope to relieve students and faculty of the
tedium and costs involved with printing these
titles out by having Documents staff scan the
titles, post them to the Internet in PDF format,
and inform patrons of their posting via email.
