Acknowledgments

The authors are indebted to numerous individuals in various agencies of the United States government and international and private organizations who gave of their time, research materials, and special knowledge on Afghan, Soviet, and South Asian affairs to provide data and perspective. The insights provided by Dr. Louis Dupree, visiting professor at Duke University in 1985, and Dr. Jon Anderson, assistant professor of anthropology at the Catholic University of America, were invaluable. Journalists Anne Hurd and Kurt Lohbeck furnished information that was unavailable from other sources. None of the individuals is in any way responsible for the work of the authors, however.

The authors also wish to express their appreciation to members of the Foreign Area Studies staff who contributed to the preparation of the book. These included Catherine L. Connor, Denise R. Barber, Kathryn R. Stafford, and Andrea T. Merrill, who edited the manuscript and the accompanying figures and tables; Harriett R. Blood and Gustavo Adolfo Mendoza, who prepared the maps and charts; Wayne W. Olsen, administrative assistant; Reiko 1. Seekins, who prepared the cover and chapter illustrations; Gilda V. Nimer, who furnished valuable bibliographic and library assistance; and Lisa C. Young and Jesse L. Williams, who typed the manuscript. The authors are particularly grateful to Ernest A. Will, publicatons manager, and to Dorothy M. Lohmann, the assistant director for administration. Beverly Mohamed prepared the index.
