The Galvin Library is a Federal Depository Library.
It complies with the Federal Depository Library Program.
The
Federal Depository Library Program (44 USC 19)
provides for the establishment and maintenance of
depository libraries and the distribution of Government
documents to those libraries for use by the public.
(Federal Depository Library Manual, 11/93)
Non-members of the IIT community may visit the
library and use its Government Depository and other
resources, but the library staff reserves the right to
limit access to materials, resources, or equipment
needed by IIT students and faculty. For more
information, see our list of Galvin
Library Policies.
The Galvin Library has
been a selective federal depository library since 1982.
We receive 40% of the government documents that are
produced by the United States and printed through the
Government Printing Office. Government information
has recently been moving to a more electronic format.
We maintain a collection of Internet
Resources that can be accessed through our site.
Government Documents are
not organized under the same classification scheme as
the general collection. The documents are organized and
shelved according to the Superintendent of Documents
(SuDoc) numbers.
The SuDoc number is
unique in that it always has a colon. For example, A
1.1: is an annual report from the Agriculture
Department. The letter in the SuDocs number refers to
the publishing agency such as: "A" Agriculture
Dept."C" Census "D" Defense
"E" Energy "HE" Health and Human
Services "X-Y" Congress.
The documents are
arranged alphabetically by the government agency. You
may locate the agency letter with the SuDoc
Agency Chart. The numbers are whole numbers,
not decimals. Therefore, E 1.9: comes before E 1.12:.
