Reference Services

Reference

A Reference Librarian is available at the Biegler Library to provide professional consultation to library patrons in identifying and retrieving appropriate resources to satisfy information needs. Biegler staff can assist users in developing search strategies for efficient information retrieval, finding answers to simple, short reference questions, and providing instruction in the use of a variety of computer systems and information resources.

A Reference Librarian is generally available 2:00-9:30p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9:00-2:00p.m. on Saturdays. Individual consultations can be scheduled by appointment if preferred. Contact the Biegler Library at 630.682.6050.

Online Searching and Instruction

Biegler staff can instruct and assist users in searching all databases available through the Biegler Library's web page.

Online Resources
Students are provided with access to over 85 online databases. Many of these databases include citations from the published literature, but several include the full-text articles or scanned images from thousands of scholarly journals. The databases are accessible from your laboratories, offices, and homes by accessing the Biegler Library Web site.

A few of these web-based databases include:

  • IEEE which provides access to scanned, full-image articles from IEEE journals, Proceedings and Conferences;

  • Compendex (known as Engineering Index in its printed form), which is the primary database available for most engineering information;

  • Medline (known as Index Medicus in its printed form) for all fields of medicine;

  • PsycINFO (known as Psychological Abstracts in its printed form) for psychology;

  • EBSCO, which is multidisplinary and covers business, psychology and the sciences.;

  • ACM Digital Library, which provides access to journals and proceedings;

  • Books 24x7, which includes more than 8500 full-text books online.
