The Mid-South Side
Community Visitors Reaffirming its historic commitment to the mid-South Side, Illinois
Institute of Technology and its libraries work closely with community
organizations and residents on a host of projects and a variety of
educational opportunities for young area residents. The Galvin Library has
assisted in many of the programs offered to area students: Women in
Science and Engineering (WISE), Young Scientist Summer Camp, and the
Discovery Approach to Science Enhancement (DASH) program.
The Galvin Library is also a Federal Depository Library. It complies
with the Federal Depository Library Program. The Federal Depository
Library Program (44 USC 19) provides for the establishment and maintenance
of depository libraries and the distribution of Government documents to
those libraries for use by the public. (Federal Depository Library Manual,

Members of the local community may visit the library during public
access hours and use its
government depository and other resources, but the library staff reserves
the right to limit access to materials, resources, or equipment needed by IIT students and faculty. After
6:00PM an IIT ID, or an ID from an ILCSO consortia member will be needed
to enter the library. IIT alumni are permitted to access the library
after 6:00PM according to
alumni policies
and procedures.
No borrowing privileges are allowed. However, individuals who wish to
borrow a specific book the library owns may use the interlibrary loan
services of their local Chicago Public
Library branch.
Galvin Library instruction librarians offer workshops to area residents

Visitors must conduct themselves in a way that does not disrupt the
study environment of the library or threaten damage to library
collections, resources, facilities, or equipment.
Each visitor under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult, 21
years of age or older, and must accept the terms stated above. In
addition, parents are responsible for the use of the library and the
behavior of their children.
Visitors who fail to adhere to these policies will be asked to leave
the library.
